The current favoured lead is a Black Panther 14 x 5.5" Bird's Eye Maple, winning out over my wonderful 14 x 8" Gretsch Rosewood that has remained with me after it's purchase in 1985.

Both snares give me a lot of depth (in more ways than one!) to my sound, but with the addition of another Black Panther, this time a small Natural Maple 10x5.5 snare, I really do have a wide soundscape to work with.

It has a wonderful snap to the sound, perfect for accents and underlying rhythms.

This actually now leaves me with four snares as I still have the unplayed Gretsch Catalina Ash 5 x 14" that came with the kit that now forms the shells for my electronic kit.

Hardly matching the snare collections many seem to have that run in several dozen or more, it remains a near perfect collection for me, with just a keen eye on a Cherry wood snare with another beautiful tone.

that's a lovely looking little snare graham..i found a gretsch basswood 10x5 which i used in another band a while ago for accents.. even though
it's at the cheaper end of the scale, the crisp tones it produces
certainly gets some favourable comments!

Thanks Ross.
Your Gretsch sounds lovely.
Black Panther's seem very
under-rated by the media, but drummers seen to love them, go figure!
