When you have been lurking in the shadows for as long as I have, many fine pieces of popular music do not reach you. However, with my return, there is much goodness in the world of music to be had. I know I have appreciated whisperings of those to watch and hear, so I will pass on to you some of my recent cravings. We have to start with the legend that is Genesis. | Their retrospective box sets 1970-1975, 1976-1982 and 1983-1998 are not just simply another cynical remarketing ploy, they actually offer up something new in the form of some stunning SACD, 5.1 remixes. |
|
The new aural adventures are simply out of the world and even if you don't wish to spend a month's salary on the box sets, individual cds can be obtained and I fully recommend that you do so.
Naturally, if you don't have a 5.1 system, you may need to set aside anything up to an entire year's salary, but the Bay Of E can be your friend and an excellent bespoke system can be put together for under the £500 / $800 coinage.
I do suggest you do this as your ears will love you forever!
So what else fell into my radar?
| If you are a drummer, you will know they come no better than young Mr Gavin Harrison who has risen from early drum seats such as The Nolan Sisters, to now playing with the very best the world has to offer. |
He and I go back almost 30 years, but I doubt he would have any idea who I even was given my absence.
Having done the math, his approach to playing is possibly unique and everywhere I turn, he lurks, sticks and overrides at the ready - top man too. So it's not surprising that he appears on all of the following that I suggest you drop that copy of 'Currency Investments For The Terminally Penniless' and rush out and buy. Gavin Harrison & 05RIC - Circles Just out and easily worth £5000.00 / $8000.00 of anyone's pocket change or cattle collection. |
|
| Gavin Harrison & 05RIC - Drop The first joining of the union. I pawned an original Otto von Guericke electric generator and still had change for one of Mrs Miggin's finest- Marvellous! | Porcupine Tree - Fear Of The Blank Planet Yes, still featuring Havin Garrison. Sadly not the 5.1, but still a tasty delicacy in any form! |
|
| Steve Wilson - Insurgentes This young man has come a long way since Pride Of Passion, I quite frankly, did not follow his path. Sliding Doors anyone? Gavin is spotted lurking in the corner once again. | Ed Poole - 4 This was a Gavin Harrison free zone, until he showed up one day selling resolving lessons and made the cup of tea last an entire CD. If you like people who slap sticks, they come no better than the very decent human being known as Edwin. |
|
Ed has slapped the best, from George Michael to Meredith Brookes, Lisa Stansfield, Toyah, Romeos Daughter and the legendary Jakko, so it's "Three Chairs" for Ed. Finally for this musical interlude, if you wish to add a visual element to your Gavin Harrison appreciation corner, you can do no better than the DVD 'Rhythmic Horizons' - It will fill those endless sleepless nights and in no time, you too will be able to discuss Polyrhythmic Theory with your clan of jesters down at the local watering hole or Mrs Miggin's Pie Shop.
Excellent stuff, one and all and with that.... Off into the light...
